The mission of IDN represents the collective intellectual energies of a
diverse group of faculty and research partners IDN engages faculty in our mission by:
Creating partnerships Through IDN's partnerships with the Carter Center, in-country scholars, NGOs,
policy makers and community groups, faculty are part of a network whose
understanding of on-the-ground issues informs their research.
Fostering communities IDN's multi-disciplinary
approach brings together faculty from across the university, including those who
have not traditionally been involved in development research, to build
creative, vibrant research communities.
Making an impact IDN's network of research partners and emphasis on impact-oriented
research allows faculty to conduct research that informs development policies
and programs. Faculty also play an important role in training the next
generation of researchers, by incorporating the value of partnership, local
knowledge and research for positive social transformation into their teaching
and advising.
Providing support Some of the biggest challenges faculty members face in conducting
development research comes not from the research itself, but from administrative
and logistical issues that get in the way of progress. IDN is committed to
helping faculty get the resources and support they need to be successful,
including coordinating conferences and meetings, publicizing and promoting
research, assisting with travel and creating networks that enable faculty to
share ideas. We also play a role in helping find follow-on funding for projects
that research that demonstrates our values and fulfills our mission.
